Languages

Our main combinations are translations from English, French, German, Italian and Portuguese into Spanish. We also translate from these languages into Portuguese (Continental or Brazilian).

Hermes Traducciones can also translate into and out of many languages spoken across Europe, including the official regional languages of Spain (Catalan, Basque and Galician).

We are also able to adapt translations into the different varieties of Spanish spoken in Latin America.

Our texts are always translated by translators whose mother tongue is the target language and who are in daily contact with the language.

Localisation

In its Localization Industry Primer (which was translated into Spanish by Hermes Traducciones), LISA defines localisation as ‘the process of modifying products or services to account for differences in distinct markets’. It goes on to explain how localisation covers three fundamental aspects: linguistic issues, content and cultural issues, and technical issues. In other words, it involves adapting a product – usually computer software or a website – to another language or culture. This predominantly involves translation, but also other equally important tasks: engineering, desktop publishing, compilation, testing, management, etc.

Localisation is therefore a speciality in its own right, requiring specific knowledge on how to work and use specialist programmes.

Many of you might be asking what the difference is between localisation and traditional translation. The answer is that the main difference is in the area of application. While it is true that localisation involves a translation process (for example, manuals and other documents, user interfaces, help texts and error messages), it may also be necessary to change the names of products to avoid unfortunate associations and dangerous double entendres in the target language. Nevertheless, the process also requires other types of knowledge and techniques that are not purely linguistic but are essential for the entire process.

Localisation is our main specialisation at Hermes Traducciones. It is no coincidence that our company was set up by a localisation group that was part of the now-extinct Digital Equipment Corporation (now Hewlett-Packard), which began all the way back in the 1980s. The knowledge accumulated by our managing director, and kept up to date over the years, is one of our greatest assets, and has been transmitted to all our employees and partners, making us stand out from many of our competitors. We must not forget that Hermes Traducciones has been working in localisation since 1991, and was probably the first Spanish company to be almost 100% dedicated to this activity. Not only did Hermes witness the launch of the first computer-assisted translation program, IBM TranslationManager, but it also became a regular user of the program on the OS/2 and Windows platforms.

Finally, our interest in the industry has led us to participate in the main localisation forums around the world.

Free language-queries service

At Hermes Traducciones, we have great respect for our main working language: Spanish. Furthermore, as a benefactor member of the Fundación pro Real Academia Española and Fundéu-BBVA, we feel an obligation to keep our language as healthy as possible in order to preserve its rich cultural heritage and improve it in so far as we can.

We therefore provide a free consultation service through which translators or the general public can send us any queries, suggestions or contributions. Our team of language specialists and translators will do everything they can to provide information to help clarify your questions.

Because of our heavy workload and the number of queries we receive, the time we take to reply may vary, but we will try to reply as quickly as possible.

You can send any queries by e-mail to juanjo.arevalillo@atendum.com. For the purposes of compiling statistics, we would ask you to include the following information in your message: your personal details, the company for which you work (if applicable) and your profession. It will be our pleasure to try to help you.
