History of Hermes Traducciones

  • 2018: Hermes Traducciones moves its headquarters from Las Rozas to Pozuelo de Alarcón, also in the outskirts of Madrid.
  • 2018: Hermes Traducciones attends the 13th International EUATC Conference, where its staff intensively works in the organisation committee in support of ASPROSET, the national hosting association. Juan José Arevalillo opened and closed the conference as the President of the hosting association, and participated in some experts’ panels.
  • 2017: Juan José Arevalillo is invited to the experts’ panel «New Professional Profiles in the Language Industry» in the Translating Europe Forum 2017 organised by the Directorate General of Translation of the European Comission held in Brussels.
  • 2017: Hermes Traducciones organises and holds the Stakeholders’ Meeting of eTransFair Project in the premises of the EU’s Madrid representation office. More than 50 representatives of translation companies, universities, freelancers and professional associations attended this meeting to know about the intellectual outputs of this project at the moment and to hold round tables on translators’ academic training in relation to industry’s needs.
  • 2017: Hermes Traducciones implements its remote work model for the whole Production staff in Madrid headquarters and for the remote staff in Malaga and Seville.
  • 2017: Hermes Traducciones closes down its physical premises in Malaga.
  • 2017: Hermes Traducciones updates its ISO-9001 quality certification to 2015 version, including significant changes in risk management. At the same time, the ISO-17100 certification is also renewed.
  • 2016: Hermes Traducciones joins as a voting member of the Spanish Technical Standardisation Committee 174 of AENOR for translation services. This committe works on all the International ISO standards for language industry under the umbrella of ISO TC37 committee. The Spanish committee is funded by the Spanish Association of Translation Service Providers ASPROSET, and is chaired by Juan José Arevalillo on behalf of this association.
  • 2016: Juan José Arevalillo is the keynote speaker on market-HE cooperation schemes  from an international perspective in St. Jerome’s Day Conference held in Budapest and organised by the BME Centre for Modern Languages of the University of Technology and Economics of Budapest.
  • 2016: Hermes Traducciones becomes one of the consortium members of the EU-funded Erasmus+ project eTransFair (How to Achieve Innovative, Inclusive and Fit-for Market Specialised Translator Training?) together with the BME Centre for Modern Languages of the University of Technology and Economics of Budapest and the Centre for Translation Studies of University of Vienna. This project will cover the period from 2016 to 2019. It aims at modernising the higher education programmes in the field of specialised translation by improving transversal skills that prepare translation students for the language industry market and by providing ICT-based innovative teaching material and assessment tools to teachers. A special attention will be paid to inclusiveness and to disadvantaged groups when fostering digital skills. 
  • 2015: Hermes Traducciones pilots its new remote work model to the project management team in Madrid and Malaga to favour a better work-life balance.
  • 2014: Juan José Arevalillo, Hermes’ Managing Director, named as Vice-President of EUATC (European Union of Associations of Translation Companies).
  • 2014: Juan José Arevalillo, Hermes Traducciones’ Managing Director, represents EUATC in the FIT XXth World Congress from 4th to 6th August 2014 at Berlin. He is presenting co-operation ways between FIT and EUATC in common translation industry issues, together with an expert panel on this topic.
  • 2014: Hermes Traducciones is one of the translation companies participating in Agorà pilot project, under which the application developed for this EU project will be tested in order to match students and translation companies and assign quality internship placements. Hermes Traducciones is one of the members of Agorà consortium, funded by the EU and managed by Università di Bologna.
  • 2014. Hermes Traducciones participates in the PONT Workshop, organised by Grupo Tradumàtica of Autonomous University of Barcelona (Spain), as the final activity of the post-graduation course Tradumàtica: Translation and Information and Communication Technologies 2013-2014, in which Juan José Arevalillo, Hermes’ Managing Director, gives the translation project management module. In this workshop, selected translation companies meet students of the course in order to see possibilities of internships and placement in real-world environments.
  • 2014. Hermes Traducciones sponsors the 5th International Congress ESLETRA, «Spanish, a Translation Language», organised by Tremédica and ESLETRA in New York, 25th and 26th April 2014.
  • 2014. Hermes sponsors the 2nd Specialisation Course on Style Review and Typographical Syntax (English and Spanish), organised by the Department of Translation & Interpreting of Malaga University, from 10th to 21st March 2014. During this course Juan José Arevalillo, Hermes’ Managing Director, gives a workshop on translation revision, and Manuel Arcedillo, Translation-Applied IT specialist at Hermes, lectures on using macros and other procedures as a tool for typographical syntax review.
  • 2013. Hermes Traducciones renews its double quality certification to the UNE-EN-15038 and ISO-9001 quality standards with TÜV-Rheinland. During the physical audits both in our premises in Madrid and Malaga, zero non-conformities were found by the external auditors, which is translated into an absolute success and happens for the second time since the initial certification.
  • 2013: Juan José Arevalillo, Hermes’ Managing Director, named as Treasurer of EUATC (European Union of Associations of Translation Companies).
  • 2013: Hermes Traducciones, partner of the association Música en Vena (Music in Vein), a non-profit association which aims at improving the lives of patients, relatives and sanitarfy in hospitals through culture and music in particular. Hermes Traducciones has freely provided the translation into English of their activity dossier. For more information, visit Música en Vena.
  • 2013: Hermes Traducciones, founding member of the new Spanish association ASPROSET (Association of Translation Service Providers Industry), which consists of translation companies having a quality certification and which replaces the old ACT (Association of Translation Companies) with all its associative heritage.
  • 2013. Hermes Traducciones keeps its #15 position in Common Sense Advisory’s «The Top Language Service Providers in Southern Europe in 2013» list. 
  • 2012. Hermes Traducciones renews its double quality certification to the UNE-EN-15038 and ISO-9001 quality standards with TÜV-Rheinland.
  • 2012. Hermes Traducciones chosen as a member of EU’s EXPERT (EXPloiting Empirical appRoaches to Translation) project directed by the University of Wolverhampton. This project aims at training young researchers to promote the research, development and use of hybrid language translation technologies.
  • 2012. Hermes Traducciones included in Common Sense Advisory’s «The Top Language Service Providers in Southern Europe in 2012» list at position #15.
  • 2012. Hermes Traducciones is selected as one of the two business partners in AGORA pilot project in the framework of ERASMUS multilateral project for the setting-up of a European market for cross-border placements of Translation students and graduates. This project is managed by EU’s EMT network and pilot project and EUATC.
  • 2012. Juan José Arevalillo participates in experts panel in the prestigious «7th International Seminar on Language and Journalism», organised by San Millán de la Cogolla Foundation and Fundéu-BBVA.  
  • 2011. Hermes Traducciones breaks its turnover record with € 2,091,316.37.
  • 2011. Hermes Traducciones renews its double quality certification to the UNE-EN-15038 and ISO-9001 quality standards with TÜV-Rheinland. During the physical audits both in our premises in Madrid and Malaga, zero non-conformities were found by the external auditors, which is translated into an absolute success.
  • 2011. Juan José Arevalillo represents Hermes Traducciones, ACT and EUATC as an active partner of European Commision’s OPTIMALE workshop on optimising professional translator training in a multilingual Europe.
  • 2011. Hermes Traducciones celebrates 20 years in translation and localisation industry after its foundation in 1991.
  • 2010. Hermes Traducciones reaches its historical € 1,936,661 turnover record.
  • 2010. Implementation of Plunet BusinessManager as Hermes Traducciones’ core system to automate translation and localisation project management.
  • 2009. Hermes Traducciones is awarded the Linguistic Quality Certificate by Fundéu-BBVA due to the linguistic quality of its Spanish website.
  • 2007. Hermes Traducciones is awarded the quality certification of the European Quality Standard for Translation Services (EN-15038).
  • 2007. Hermes Traducciones is awarded the quality certification of the ISO-9001 quality standard.
  • 2007. Juan José Arevalillo, the managing director of Hermes Traducciones, named by directivosplus.com as manager of the year 2007 in the SMEs category in Spain.
  • 2007. Hermes Traducciones joins the EFE news agency’s Fundéu-BBVA as an associate member.
  • 2007. Hermes Traducciones joins the Madrid Association of Globalisation, Internationalisation, Localisation and Translation Companies (AMEGILT) as a founding member.
  • 2005. New branch opened in Malaga at the south of Spain.
  • 2002. Hermes Traducciones’ in-house performance management system is implemented to measure the productivity and quality of translations simultaneously together with other management variables.
  • 2002. Hermes Traducciones becomes an assembly member of Globalisation and Localisation Association GALA.
  • 2002. Main headquarters relocated to the new premises in Las Rozas, Madrid.
  • 2000. Hermes Traducciones becomes a public limited company (‘sociedad limitada’) with the name ‘Hermes Traducciones y Servicios Lingüísticos, SL’. Juan José Arevalillo and Nuria Asenjo Sánchez-Ramos are the joint and several directors.
  • 2000. The magazine Actualidad (Publicaciones de Comercio Internacional, SA) grants Hermes Traducciones its ‘award for professional merit’.
  • 1999. Hermes Traducciones joins the Fundación pro Real Academia Española (www.rae.es) as a benefactor member.
  • 1999. Hermes Traducciones joins the Spanish Association of Translation Companies (ACT) as an assembly member.
  • 1998. Hermes Traducciones’ first internship programme is set up in partnership with the Universidad Europea de Madrid in June 1998. This was the first of many other partnerships with various Spanish universities.
  • 1998. Hermes Traducciones becomes an assembly member of Localisation Industry Standards Association (LISA), until 2006.
  • 1993. Juan José Arevalillo Doval becomes the company’s sole director when Manuela Álvarez Rodríguez leaves to join another company.
  • 1991. Hermes Traducciones y Servicios Lingüísticos, SC is founded in Tres Cantos, Madrid (Spain) as a joint venture by Juan José Arevalillo and Manuela Álvarez Rodríguez, both of whom were former technical editors for the Local Engineering Group of Digital Equipment Corporation Spain (now Hewlett-Packard). Hermes Traducciones was founded using only Spanish capital, and this has remained the case until today.
